Taffety Punk is an artist run company. All work emanates from the core company. All decisions are made to support their work.
We know how difficult and frustrating it can be to submit your resume, play, demo, or design portfolio and then not hear anything. So, to make things easier, we want to offer some honest guidelines about what we're about, what kind of work we do, how to submit, and what to expect from us. If you clicked here) we expect you're a kindred soul looking for a dance partner.
The best thing you can do to get to know us is to come to some of our shows. Volunteering is another very good way. We need lots of help. For now, the help we need tends to come in sporadic and frenzied bursts. So let us know if you're interested in that sort of thing.
We think of ourselves as a band, and the most important thing for us is to sustain the well-being and artistic development of the artists in the band. Most of the work we do is self-generated, and naturally we start all projects with our own folks in mind. So, if we say "no" it is absolutely nothing personal. It's just what we do. That being said, we do occasionally open the door to guest artists. So...
If you can't come to a show, research our previous productions. Our production archives are available here and soon we will be posting a complete catalog with photos, reviews, press releases, and more. While perusing the images and text and sounds of our archives, we like to think that you will discover this about us:
We are attracted to work where the focus is on the performer, where the material provides opportunities to exploit music and dance, and where our core company members can work together. Additionally, we also tend to be attracted to classical, epic, or challenging material; we enjoy stories that aren't bound by realism; and we actively try to keep the design requirements simple, or at least very cheap.
Volunteeers are cool. Very very cool. If you're interested, send an email to volunteer@taffetypunk.com or a letter to us at PO Box 15392 Washington, DC 20003. Tell us what sort of things you'd like to help with: construction and painting, house management and ushering, running crew, paperwork and mailings, hanging posters, computer projects, party set ups, and anything else.
This could be you. Please send a resume to info@taffetypunk.com or to PO Box 15392 Washington, DC 20003 if you are interested in working with us as an apprentice or intern. If you are still in school, help us connect with your school as well; let's see if we can make the internship count for some kind of class credit. Local inquiries are best as we cannot provide housing or compensation at this time.
As a 501(c)3 non-profit company, we rely on our trustees to nurture and advise us. These are the good folks that take their work very seriously: to promote, provide, and protect. If you are interested in joining our trustees, please call us at (202) 873-5330, or email us at info@taffetypunk.com. We would love to talk to you.
None of our work would be possible without the beautiful and gracious support of our donors and sponsors. If you would like to sponsor a show, or a company member, please call us at (202) 873-5330, or email us at info@taffetypunk.com.
Please know, for reasons mentioned above, that we don't often go outside of our own company of artists to look for material.
When we do we are attracted to work where the focus is on the performer, where the material provides opportunities to exploit music and dance, and where our core company members can work together. Additionally, we also tend to be attracted to classical, epic, or challenging material; we enjoy stories that aren't bound by realism; and we actively try to keep the design requirements simple, or at least very cheap.
We'd like to think this warning wasn't necessary, but loading a play with f-bombs, blood, fornication, and substance abuse does not automatically make it a "punk" play. It's probably best not to chase the "punk" thing at all since the word defies containment, and it means a lot of different things to a lot of people. We know what it means to us.
So, consider your work against all of the above thoughts and ask yourself honestly if you think this is a good match. If you do….
How to submit
Send a one-page synopsis of the play and a ten-page sample to submission@taffetypunk.com. Please do not send us a hard copy of these things. We won't read them. Please do not send us the whole play first. We won't read that, either.
What to expect
Two company members will read the synopsis and the sample. If they decide the work exists outside Taffety Punk's aesthetic purview, they will write back to you and tell you so. If they are interested in reading more, we will request a full copy (electronic or hard copy) and bring it before the core company. After that we can't make any promises. Much time may go by between a submission and a response. This is usually because we are all very busy in rehearsal.
Either way, we'll write back to you. But we ask for your patience in the process.
Remember that our first priorities are our Company Members. We don't hold terribly many auditions. But if we do, we need to know you are out there. So please send in your info to us. Let us know you're out there.
How to submit
Please send your headshot & resume, or demo, or samples, to casting@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, attn: Casting. Please tell us act, dance, sing, play music, or some or all of the above. And it couldn't hurt to tell us about your next performance. We like shows.
What to expect
To be honest, you may never hear back from us. Though we would like to send everyone a card to thank them for their submission, it's just a lot to ask of an already overtaxed bunch of folks. We will save your information and keep an eye out. Do let us know if you're in a show.
Please send a resume, demo (or link) to production@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, attn: production. Are you also a performer? Got any shows coming up? Tell us! Always interested in new choreography.
Music is a big part of what we're all about. Please send a demo (physical or link) and a resume to production@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003.
We definitely want to know you! Send resume and portfolio link to production@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, and label it ATTN: Production. Tell us if you're in or near DC.
Please let us know you're out there. Just before almost every show opens, a whirlwind of scenic design work is usually needed — construction, painting, costume assistance, lighting assistance, and more. And during a show, we need folks off stage to help help the show run. If you'd like to help us out in any of these areas, please send resume to info@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, and label it ATTN: Production.
There are no paid administrative positions available at this time. However, we do often need administrative help. Please let us know if you'd like to volunteer. Send resume to info@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, and label it ATTN: Volunteers. Tell us what sort of things you'd like to help with: house management and ushering, running crew, paperwork and mailings, hanging posters, computer projects, party set ups, construction and painting, and anything else. Thanks.
