Dear Friends of Taffety Punk,
Thank you all for a fabulous year! Our 2024 season was a celebration of what Taffety Punk does best and we are ever grateful for your amazing support. We are proud to be the artistic home for so many talented and creative performing artists in the DC area. For many years our Generator Project has provided space, time, and resources for our artists to put their dreams to work. This art incubator has led to the production of numerous acclaimed original works — and this year was no exception, with more plays, dance, music, and even a book!!
This April we mounted an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis with choreography by co-founder Erin Mitchell Nelson, and original music by company member Kathy Cashel. This seldom-heard epic poem was staged to “beautiful effect” (Broadway World), and starred company members Tonya Beckman and Lise Bruneau with guest dancer Sarina Martinez de Osaba.
At this year’s Helen Hayes Awards, company member Kelsey Mesa’s play, La Salpêtriere, won an award for Outstanding Production while company member Kimberly Gilbert won Outstanding Supporting Actor for her work in the show. The play had no less than five nominations at this year’s ceremony.
In the summer, we were thrilled to release company member Teresa’s Spencer’s satirical book of what she calls “love poems to my cat-callers.” Too Like the Lightning is available wherever books are sold, and we are looking forward to releasing an audiobook version early next year featuring Taffety Punk’s Riot Grrrls as narrators.
Speaking of the Riot Grrrls, this October our all female classical ensemble rocked out for the first time since 2019 with The Tragedie of Macbeth, directed by visiting artist Michelle Shupe. The show played to rave reviews. There was so much excitement surrounding this play with its fabulous cast and design team we sold out the entire run before the show officially opened.
