....:: Mission ::................................................

The Mission of the Taffety Punk Theatre is to establish a dynamic ensemble of actors, dancers and musicians who ignite a public passion for theatre by making the classical and the contemporary exciting, meaningful, and affordable.

We envision a theatre with a living function in a community: to examine, to teach, to share, to provide a laboratory for the human experience.

Smarter. Cheaper. Better.

Why an ensemble?
Imagine if the Beatles had changed members on every record. That would have been terrible, right? Stable ensembles achieve the greatest work: by working together all the time, by growing together. So we want that. Dance companies, sports teams, and rock bands embrace this kind of long-term collaboration. It’s what makes them successful. We think this is the foundation on which to build exciting and groundbreaking theatre.

Can we make theatre affordable?
We have to. The cost of producing theatre has always been prohibitive; in spite of this, we are determined to make theatre affordable for everyone. Theatre is a gift to the community. It should not be a luxury.

Is there a lack of public passion for theatre?
Yes. Theatre is awesome… but only 5% of the American public goes to see it. Why? We don’t know but we have our suspicions. We want to identify and eliminate whatever keeps people from experiencing this vital art form. We already know one problem.

Plea for filthy lucre
Our aims are ambitious. Developing the environment we are describing, and the means to sustain it, will require a lot of support. Please consider what we’re trying to do, and if you’re into it, we would be very grateful for any donation or sponsorship you can offer. Taffety Punk is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit entity. Your donations are tax-deductable.

We think of ourselves as a band. A theatre band, if you will, in which acting, dance, and music are intricately linked. We believe theatre to be vital and essential. The ongoing challenge of course is that theatre has always been expensive to make, and increasingly expensive to see. We answer that challenge. We want to make sure everyone who wants to come to the theatre can come. That's what we're all about.

We chose a name with classical reverberations and modern kick. The term “Taffety Punk” appears in Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well, and in that context means roughly “a well-dressed whore.” Sound a little crazy? Consider that 400 years later Uta Hagen, lamenting the death of the actor-driven theatre in America, likened actors to prostitutes pimping themselves to producers. Our goal is to put the art back into the hands of the artists.

Our company members grew up in the punk underground, and there honed an artistic aesthetic that embraces the positive and the possible. The greatest lessons we learned from Punk Rock: be who you are and fight for your ideals. We continue to do so today, in whatever costumes we are wearing.

We are Taffety Punks.
